Spaces
Learn about spaces and cross-cutting organization in Pilfer
Spaces operate within and alongside projects, allowing cross-cutting functionality and organization of scouts and assets across the company. They enable resource sharing between projects and help prevent projects from operating in independent silos.
Creating Spaces
To create a new space:
- Navigate to the Spaces page
- Click "Create Space"
- Fill in the space details:
- Name: Space name
- Description: Rich text description
- Status: Draft, Active, or Archived
- Priority: Urgent, High, Medium, Low, or None
- Current Strength: A 0-10 rating of the space's current state
- Project: Optional link to a parent project
Spaces can be scoped to your organization (team spaces) or kept as personal spaces.
Cross-Cutting Organization
Spaces solve the problem of resource sharing across projects. For example, multiple projects may require the same piece of equipment (like a 3D printer). A space allows scouts and assets targeted towards this equipment to be shared amongst multiple projects.
This means:
- Shared Resources: Assets and scouts can be linked to multiple projects through spaces
- No Silos: Projects don't operate independently - they can share resources
- Better Planning: You can see how resources are used across the company
- Efficient Purchasing: Avoid duplicate purchases by seeing what's already available
Space Organization
Spaces help organize your work by:
- Grouping Scouts: Link scouts to spaces to track purchases for shared resources
- Grouping Assets: Link assets to spaces to see what resources are available
- Scoping Views: View scouts and assets filtered by space
- Cross-Project Visibility: See how resources are used across different projects
Space-Scoped Views
When viewing scouts or assets within a space context, you'll see items linked to that space. This helps you focus on resources relevant to a specific shared need or capability.
To view space-scoped content:
- Open a space's detail page
- Navigate to the Scouts or Assets tab
- You'll see scouts/assets linked to this space
Spaces vs. Projects
- Projects: Organize work around specific initiatives or goals. Resources are typically project-specific.
- Spaces: Organize around shared resources or capabilities. Resources can be used across multiple projects.
For example:
- A "3D Printing" space might contain scouts and assets for 3D printing equipment that multiple projects use
- A "Software Tools" space might track software subscriptions that benefit multiple projects
- A "Workspace" space might organize office furniture and equipment shared across projects
This distinction helps you model both project-specific spending and company-wide resource needs.
